Rangers next manager: Chris Sutton issues shock Barry Ferguson claim

Chris Sutton has spoken about Barry Ferguson and the next permanent Rangers manager after what he’s heard recently.

Gers sacked Philippe Clement and hired Ferguson as the interim boss until the end of the season.

A number of managers have been linked with the job in the summer, including former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez.

Chris Sutton claims Barry Ferguson wants the Rangers job permanently

Sutton has heard Ferguson speaking in interviews and he does not get the impression that he’s talking in a caretaker capacity.

In his view, the current interim boss wants to be named the next permanent manager in the summer.

Thus far, his reign has begun in an impressive manner and knocking Fenerbahce out of the Europa League is certainly a commendable feat.

Sutton told The Warm Up at 11:49: “I think that Barry’s certainly got his eye on the job next season, you know, from the way he’s been interviewed, you don’t often hear him talk about the role being a caretaker role.”

San Francisco 49ers must look for a proven winner

Appointing Ferguson as Rangers’ permanent manager carries significant risks, primarily due to his limited managerial experience and the monumental task ahead.

While Ferguson, a Gers legend, has started impressively as interim boss, highlighted by knocking Fenerbahce out of the Europa League, his track record is thin, with only brief stints at Clyde and Alloa Athletic yielding mixed results.

The Rangers job demands more than passion or early promise.

It requires a proven winner capable of bridging the gulf with Celtic, who have dominated domestically.

Post-takeover by the San Francisco 49ers, the Ibrox outfit need a manager who can leverage new resources to rebuild a squad plagued by inconsistency and injuries.

A figure like Benitez, with trophies at Liverpool and Real Madrid, brings tactical acumen and squad-building expertise, essential for long-term success.

Ferguson’s desire for the role, as noted by Sutton, is clear, but sentimentality could jeopardise progress.

They need a seasoned leader to maximize the 49ers’ backing and restore their status as Scotland’s top club.
