New Rangers backroom hire must prove he can fix one Ibrox failing for Derek McInnes

If Rangers are to finally stop the managerial merry-go-round then Derek McInnes must be given the structure to thrive at Ibrox.

The Gers have been in an ugly cycle of failed appointment after failed appointment, but there is hope they finally have the right man in charge.

Indeed, even the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh did not get off to the best start in this regard, with Russell Martin proving an unmitigated disaster.

There was some bad luck with Danny Rohl leaving so soon after being appointed, but they acted swiftly to appoint McInnes.

McInnes has a strong pedigree in the Scottish Premiership, but everything has to be right off the pitch.

Indeed, one such hire looks to be happening imminently, and it is an appointment that will hopefully help fix one familiar Ibrox failing.

Rangers ready to add to Dan Purdy's recruitment team

One thing Rangers have been battered for in the past decade is their shoddy recruitment record.

Indeed, Kevin Thelwell did not last long after some questionable decisions during his short time at Ibrox.

Dan Purdy is the man who leads recruitment now in his role as technical director, which he has held since June 2025.

Stig Inge Bjornebye recently took on the role of performance director on a full-time basis, and as part of his review of the structure at Ibrox, a new appointment is seemingly imminent.

The Daily Record reported that former Livingston manager David Hopkin has been headhunted to take on a major role sitting in Purdy's team.

The former Scotland international has been working at Crystal Palace where he was in charge of scouting talent in Scotland to take south of the border.

Hopkin is set to have the remit of finding the best emerging and academy talent to bring to Ibrox.

And it is here where Hopkin has to prove he can make a difference.

Rangers must blood more of their own

For too long, Rangers have been slow when it comes to blooding domestic talent.

Over the last five to 10 years, there have been several who looked like they could make the grade, who failed to really kick on.

It has led to Rangers having to look elsewhere, with the likes of Connor Barron and Lyall Cameron signed to boost their home-grown numbers.

What Rangers have to do is provide a clear pathway from the academy to first-team stars, and this is where Hopkin will have to show his eye for talent.

Ibrox News has reported on how Rangers have forged links with clubs in the Scottish football pyramid, a move that should further help blood their own talent.

But it will be on Hopkin to identify the right profile and talent early to ensure Rangers have a good production line for the future.

It is an area they have failed on too much in recent years.
