Marcelo Gallardo ‘in the frame’ to replace Michael Beale as Rangers manager

Former River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is “in the frame” to replace Michael Beale as Rangers manager, according to reports.

Writing on their live blog (2 October, 9:30), Sky Sports reported that the legendary Argentine coach is among the candidates at Ibrox and credited the Daily Record for their report.

And the Scottish news outlet report that it would be a “coup” for the club to bring him into the club, although they admit it would take a “big sell” to convince him to join.

“Gallardo has been linked with a move to the English Premier League and Ligue 1 in recent months but is biding his time,” they wrote.

“It may take a big sell to bring in the boss but could be seen as a coup for the Ibrox side to bring the boss to Europe.”

Spectacular

It’s most definitely a long shot, but if Rangers have any opportunity to bring Gallardo into the club then they absolutely have to do it.

Despite being young in age, Gallardo is a 15-time trophy winner including two league titles, and is considered as one of River Plate’s greatest managers of all time with a statue built in his honour.

While he has never managed in Europe he did play here during his playing career and will know the game well, while he would absolutely relish the big games against the likes of Celtic because he is used to the atmosphere.

But most importantly he plays an attractive brand of football that is built on attacking the opponents and dominating, so he would know the expectations here and come in to match or exceed them.

He’d be a fantastic appointment but it would no doubt be very difficult to pull off. But Rangers would be crazy not to at least try for him, although fans probably shouldn’t get too excited.
