BBC Sportscene pundit furious with Alfredo Morelos after ‘horrendous’ error in Rangers draw v Celtic
Neil McCann has blasted Alfredo Morelos for his “horrendous” error that gifted Celtic an opening goal in the Old Firm derby draw with Rangers.
The Colombian tried to switch the ball across the pitch without looking and it was intercepted by Daizen Maeda who went on to slot the ball past Allan McGregor and break the deadlock after just four minutes.
But speaking on Sportscene (2 January), McCann described the attempted pass as a “cardinal sin” and felt that James Tavernier could have done better to help recover the situation too.

“The first pass is horrendous,” he said. “It’s a cardinal sin to go square, but James Tavernier could recover that.
“He actually tries to cushion it to Goldson when he’s got an easier pass straight back to Allan McGregor. He’ll be hating himself right now for that.
“The initial mistake is from Morelos and it’s a cheap pass. He doesn’t start the game well, Morelos, I thought he started really poorly.”
Poor
It was a really bad mistake from Morelos and it summed up his first half performance really, where he missed two big sitters too.
The showing had people clamouring for Antonio Colak and even Kemar Roofe to come on for the second half, but El Buffalo came out strong in the second half and turned his performance around to help push Rangers forward.

It showed the effect that Michael Beale has had on the squad mentally, because it’s fair to say that under Giovanni van Bronckhorst this team would likely have crumbled and fallen to another heavy defeat.
Tavernier will know that he made a mistake and will be beating himself up for it, but he also made amends with his penalty and overall Rangers were able to put in a relatively good performance and will feel unlucky not to have won the game.
The title still seems out of reach after the result, but they’ve shown the progress made already and fans will be ruing individual errors rather than a poor performance.
