BBC pundit warns Scott Brown with red card threat in Rangers v Ayr after what he did

Ryan Stevenson told Scott Brown he could not afford to get a red card after the Ayr United manager was constantly in the ear of the officials during the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.

The warning came at a time when Ayr were starting to apply pressure to the Rangers defence, creating a couple of chances and competing well in the game, and if the manager was sent off, the players would’ve lost their heads.

In a fashion typical of himself, Brown was constantly moaning at the linesman and fourth officials, asking for fouls and bookings throughout, and it was a wonder he wasn’t sent off after all following his yellow card.

Commentating live for BBC Radio Scotland, Stevenson warned: “I’ll tell you what, Scott Brown is nipping away at this fourth official here as well and, I honestly mean this, he’s on at the linesman as well.

“He doesn’t want to get sent off either, because that can go onto the field. He needs to keep his composure as well because Ayr are right in this at this moment in time.”

Scott Brown embarrasses himself in Rangers v Ayr

Rangers had the last laugh when one of the pantomime villains of the day in Brown was sent home without so much as a goal as his team were brushed aside by Philippe Clement’s men despite their best efforts throughout.

Gers, of course, went into the game as overwhelming favourites given the divisional difference between the two sides, but Ayr did their best to spoil the day with several attacks, piling the pressure on and not making things easy.

In the end, it was the respective class that told both on and off the pitch. While Brown was busy crying and whinging at the officials, Clement remained composed as ever, and the substitution of Todd Cantwell in the 61st minute was what made the difference in the end.

Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could well be up this summer.

Cantwell continued his impressive form of late by lifting the ball over the goalkeeper for Fabio Silva to poke home and make it 2-0 to the Ibrox team, with any remaining hope Ayr had of snatching something from the game pulled further away from them.
