Allan McGregor ‘almost certain’ to retire in summer as Rangers line up new goalkeeper
Allan McGregor is “almost certain” to leave Rangers in the summer with Michael Beale eyeing a new number one goalkeeper, according to the Daily Record.
McGregor looked set to hang up his gloves last summer, only for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to convince him to pen a new deal for another year following the club’s exploits in the Europa League.
But with Beale now admitting that the club will target a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, the Daily Record (16 February) say it’s now more than likely that the veteran shot-stopper will retire.

“Beale said in the January window he will be targeting a new No.1 in the summer,” they wrote.
“As mentioned, McGregor is past 40 now and was widely expected to call it a day last season, but he has carried on as No,1 this term for the most part.
“But at this stage, every season he does play if any going forward will be debated as potentially his last. He’s almost certain to stop playing but could there be a coaching role at the club?”
Good time
McGregor is a legend of the club and will go down in history at Ibrox, but there is no denying that this summer will be the right time for him to stop playing.
This season we have seen more mistakes creep into his game than usual, but on top of that the fact that Michael Beale isn’t convinced.

There has been some talk of Angus Gunn and Asmir Begovic potentially coming in during the summer transfer window, and both would be far better options meaning his game time would be severely decreased.
At 41 years of age by the time the new season comes around he will be way beyond his prime, and should sit down at home and relax, reminiscing on the good times he had at the club.
In the mean time, Rangers can go and find a new number one to kick the club forwards and look to improve so that we can compete with Celtic domestically and with others in Europe.
