Chris Sutton stunned by ‘Remarkable’ Rangers after what he saw Philippe Clement do

Chris Sutton has admitted to being stunned at the job Philippe Clement has done since taking over at Rangers, labelling it “remarkable”.

The Ibrox club have lost just once in all competitions since the Belgian took over, and have pulled themselves back into the SPFL title race as well as qualified from their Europa League group in top spot.

And Sutton, speaking live on Sky Sports ahead of their clash with St Mirren (27 January, 12:11) believes Clement is getting everything right currently and is trying to get the club on track with his recent public comments about player contracts.

“He was very critical really, the talk of letting players’ contracts wind down and letting them go on a free, he seemed vocal about that, angry about that. How the club have put themselves in that position,” he said.

“What I think is remarkable at this moment in time is I think this is a pretty average Rangers team, but he is getting every last ounce out of the players. They are on an incredible run albeit they lost against Celtic, they are in a title race. He’s got them back into a title race. He’s got all these other things to contend with, but they’re actually getting results on the pitch.

“I think he is making his mark. He seems to be a steely character but it’s something in which he is telling the club they need to get on the right side of the recruitment.”

Excellent

When Michael Beale was sacked in October the majority of Rangers fans felt that the season was already being written off, such was the state the team was in.

Way off the pace in the league, fallen out of the Champions League and having spent a tonne of cash on players who weren’t performing, things looked bleak.

But Clement has come in and turned the club’s fortunes around almost immediately and there is hope once again that this season could yet bring success, with one trophy already secured.

Rangers

It’s clear the boss has a clear vision of what he wants and expects at Ibrox and he is letting the club know in no uncertain terms, which can only be seen as a good thing while he’s got the team performing on the pitch.

It’s a good thing and considering Sutton is always looking for a chance to take a dig at the light blues, him admitting that there is a title race on and that the manager has got the team going shows that they’re worrying about us again.
