Michael Stewart destroys Borna Barisic as Rangers footage drops on BBC

Michael Stewart has blasted Rangers defender Borna Barisic for his “really poor” decision making during the defeat to St Johnstone on Sunday (6 November).

The Gers were beaten 2-1 to fall seven points behind Celtic in the SPFL title race, heaping more pressure on manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst ahead of the World Cup break.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (6 November, 19:28), Stewart picked out the Croatian left-back when analysing the footage of the game as being particularly bad when it came to making decisions in the final third.

“You talk about a lacklustre Rangers, there’s a lacklustreness in the defending but also in the attacking,” he said.

“We talk about lacklustre. it’s just poor decision making from Rangers.

“This is just really poor from Barisic. He can fire it into Colak’s feet there on the edge of the box or spin it out wide to Tillman. Instead he tries to clip it to the back post where all the St Johnstone players are.

“These are simple things that when Rangers are dialled in, these are quality players. They make better decisions.

“But at the moment, for some reasons, it isn’t happening.”

Again

Once again, Rangers are not good enough in a really basic aspect of their play and it has cost them dearly in a game they have no excuses not to win.

There are plenty of injuries within the squad right now, sure, but most of them are defensive and the problems in the game on Sunday were not defensive ones for the most part.

Rangers

The team look entirely bereft of ideas going forward, which is criminal considering the amount of attacking talent and quality that Van Bronckhorst has available to him.

Sometimes the players need to remember how good they are and that the reason they play for Rangers is because they’re better than a lot of other players in the country, so keeping it simple can usually be enough.

They have to get back to the basics of the game and getting those right before they can really start pushing forward and competing, which tells you all about how bad we’ve been in recent weeks.
