Rangers: Ridvan Yilmaz ‘Terrible’ as Benfica fans raging live on BBC Sportsound
Ridvan Yilmaz was criticised for a “terrible” moment as Rangers battled Benfica to a 2-2 draw in the Europa League on 7 March, leaving home fans “raging”.
The Gers left the Estadio De Luz level in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 clash in a back-and-forth clash thanks to goals from Tom Lawrence and Dujon Sterling either side of a controversial Angel Di Maria penalty and Connor Goldson’s own goal.
But one moment in the first half saw Steven Thompson rage at defender Yilmaz while live on BBC Sportsound (7 March, 20:39) for a “terrible” corner kick before he revealed the anger of the Benfica fans at their performance.
“It’s another terrible corner,” he said.
Thompson then added that the Benfica fans were not happy about their team’s performance as the corner was swung into the box.
“They’re raging in front of us, absolutely raging,” he claimed.
What a performance by Rangers
Philippe Clement is basically a miracle worker with the way he has got this Rangers team performing despite all the injuries in the squad.
The manager has had to deal with several injuries across the squad in a host of difference positions since he joined, yet the only defeats he has suffered as boss of this great club were against Celtic and then against Motherwell.
Going to Lisbon against a Benfica side that haven’t lost a home game in the Europa League in 27 previous attempts and putting in such a good performance deserves nothing but endless praise.

Obviously having led twice it’s a shame that the team couldn’t pick up all three points, but with a second leg to come at Ibrox, there is a great chance to progress to the next round still to come.
Yilmaz, despite his terrible corners, had a solid game at left-back and has come on leaps and bounds in recent months too. This squad looks so much better under Clement.
In other Rangers news, an international FA chief has raged at one “waste of time” Ibrox loan transfer.
