Why Rangers' title hopes may hinge on outcome of Fares Ghedjemis and Amario Cozier-Duberry talks

Rangers need wingers who can positively impact games or else they can say goodbye already to their title hopes.

That was ever so evident when Derek McInnes' side limped out of the opening day of the Scottish Premiership with a 1-1 draw.

German Ryan Naderi was deployed out on the wing, which really did not add much to the Gers' threat levels up front.

Meanwhile, Djeidi Gassama was impactful at all for the Bears away at Tannadice.

Work is underway to sort out the issues in McInnes' squad but that result was the definitive proof of a growing problem.

Rangers need more than just one new wide attacker this summer.

Rangers' performance against Dundee United was far from a title challenging display.

The Gers were toothless in attack and allowed far too many chances for the home team.

In fact, Dundee United (1.64 xG) created more than the Gers (1.46 xG) did with less shots at Tannadice as per FotMob.

McInnes' widemen certainly did not help in that sense with Naderi and Gassama far off it.

Between the two, while they did create four chances, they were not exactly the best opportunities for their teammates.

Combined, they created just 0.23 expected assists. Overall, it was already clear the wide attacking areas needed reinforcements, but it has been made much clearer.

And it shows that it will not take just one signing to solve this issue facing McInnes, with the 49ers needing to act sooner rather than later.

The two most likely candidates for Rangers on the wing

Over the last few weeks, links to wide attackers have been plentiful.

Reports of a reunion with Vaclav Cerny have been touted but as Besiktas have not got Mohamed Salah through the door, that looks unlikely now.

Ibrox News did share reports that Frosinone's Fares Ghedjemis was a target for Rangers, and the Algerian would undoubtedly be an interesting acquisition.

Meanwhile, Amario Cozier-Duberry has been approached by Rangers, as they continue their business in the market.

But after Gassama and Naderi failed to impress, the Gers need to push ahead to sign both of those wingers.

Whether they can get it done remains to be seen, but Ghedjemis' creativity for Frosinone last season is the exact remedy required.

While Cozier-Duberry actually outperformed Mikey Moore last season in multiple aspects.
