Rangers: BBC Sportscene pundit shares ‘calamitous’ verdict after Gers and Celtic defeats

Neil McCann says it was a “calamitous weekend” for officials in the Scottish Premiership as a number of questionable decisions were made.

The Gers lost to a Dan Casey goal in Saturday’s (2 March) clash with Motherwell at Ibrox, but the scorer should never have been on the field.

Casey escaped punishment for a crunching tackle on Ross McCausland earlier in the game that led to a confrontation with a Gers staff member.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was also fuming at some of the decisions made in his side’s loss at Hearts on Sunday (3 March), as they missed the chance to climb above Rangers.

Yang Hyun-jun was sent off for a high boot on Alex Cochrane, while Tomoki Iwata gave away a penalty for a controversial handball.

Rangers and Celtic both drop points in Scottish Premiership

Speaking on BBC Sportscene [3 March, 22m 41s], former Rangers midfielder McCann said: “It’s been another calamitous weekend.

“Both in terms of decisions missed and decisions given by officials, whether on the pitch or off it.”

Rodgers’ gripe was the fact that the game, in his words, was “refereed outside the field”, with VAR having to intervene and make game-changing calls.

The same has been true in a number of Rangers’ matches, with decisions going both for and against the Light Blues.

For all the talk of the decisions balancing themselves out over the course of a season, it does not necessarily work out that way.

And given just how tight it is at the top of the table, with a couple of Old Firms to come, you just know the title will be decided by a refereeing call.

A penalty in the closing stages on the final day, say, which would overwrite any other decision – right or wrong – from earlier in the campaign.

The officials need to be on the ball and stop making so many errors if this title race is to be decided purely by the quality of the two sides.
