Why Vaclav Cerny transfer would continue Rangers pattern as Barry Ferguson wants deal done
Rangers have been urged by Barry Ferguson to re-sign Vaclav Cerny after his previous spell on loan.
Cerny was at Ibrox in the 2024-25 campaign, during which Ferguson spent time in caretaker charge.
That season was yet another tumultuous one for the Gers, but the Czechia international showed what he is capable of with 11 goals.
There was talk of Cerny moving to Glasgow permanently that summer, but he instead made the move from Wolfsburg to Besiktas.
Rangers have been linked with Cerny again of late, despite his success so far in Turkey.
And former boss Ferguson would love to see him back at Ibrox for good.
Why Rangers have renewed hope of signing Vaclav Cerny
Cerny registered five goals and eight assists in the Super Lig last season for Besiktas.
Despite that, and the fact his contract runs until 2028, there has been talk of him being used as a rotational player going forward.
That is why Rangers still have hope of re-signing Cerny before the summer transfer window closes.
For that to happen, though, it is suggested the player himself will have to ask for a move.
Writing in his column for the Daily Record on Friday, Ferguson said: "I’d take him in a heartbeat. I liked everything about him.
"He’s got a bit about him. When things weren’t going right, he wasn’t happy. He had a bit of anger in him, which I really like.
"The thing about Cerny is, he’s a game-changer. His numbers were really good at Rangers. When we got him on it, he was on fire for us."
As Ferguson went on to say in his column, there is another box that Cerny ticks.
Why Cerny deal would follow familiar pattern
Rangers this week hired Allan McGregor as goalkeeping coach.
It goes without saying that McGregor is very much someone who gets the club.
As is Jim McAllister, who looks set to return as kitman after his acrimonious exit a few years back.
You then have Derek McInnes and Lawrence Shankland - a pair who supported Rangers growing up.
And don't forget the returning Ross McCrorie, who emerged through the Auchenhowie ranks.
It is has been clear for a while that the Gers lack people who understand the club.
Cerny very much does, in the view of Ferguson, and that is why - on top of his attacking numbers - a deal would make perfect sense.
