Rangers: Door closes on Steven Gerrard return as Danny Rohl appointment snubbed

Steven Gerrard looks set to miss another potential chance of a Rangers return.

The Englishman has long been linked with a move back to Ibrox after his initial departure for Aston Villa in November 2021.

Fans certainly weren’t impressed when the Liverpool legend departed mid-season for Villa Park, but that hasn’t stopped the chances of a comeback.

There was interest before the introduction of Russell Martin and then Danny Rohl, as other options were preferred in Govan.

Gerrard has even been linked with a Rangers return recently, but that has instantly become unlikely as the German looks set to stick around.

Danny Rohl misses out on Wolfsburg job

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been the subject of mixed reviews in G51 after a positive run came to an end with a bang.

There was a drop off in form towards the end of the campaign that ultimately left his side out of the Scottish Premiership title race.

That drop-off certainly raised concerns at Ibrox, as many questioned whether he was the man to lead the Gers forward into the new season.

The surprise would have been if Rohl had left of his own accord to take a new role elsewhere.

A report from the Daily Record on Tuesday revealed that the head coach was at the top of Wolfsburg’s shortlist as they hunt for a new manager.

The chances of that move happening are now increasingly unlikely as the German outfit looks set to hire Tobias Strobl after their relegation to 2. Bundesliga.

That means Rohl is set to make pre-season preparations with Rangers, something which certainly won’t please Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard still waiting for Rangers return

It has felt as if the ex-England international would represent the Light Blues once again at some point in the near future.

Many had expected that to be last season, but Rohl was instead given the chance to take charge.

There was then a potential chance for Gerrard to come in should the German have been sacked or even moved on to Wolfsburg.

Steven Gerrard Rangers win rate

The latter looks to be off the table, and it feels unlikely that he will be sacked at this stage, so he will be ready to guide the G51 outfit into the new campaign.

It will be interesting to see how things go under Rohl moving forward, but it’s fair to imagine that Gerrard will be watching closely with an eye to a potential Ibrox return.
