Barry Ferguson heartened by what he’s hearing on Rangers transfers – ‘Music to my ears’

Barry Ferguson is encouraged by what he’s heard from Danny Rohl about potential Rangers transfers in January.

Rohl remains unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership since taking charge at Ibrox, but Rangers were held 2-2 by Dundee United last time out and are now winless in two.

Scoring twice was an improvement on the back of Rangers’ goalless home draw with Falkirk a few days earlier, but it is clear more attacking quality is needed.

Rangers flop Youssef Chermiti was once again slammed for his performance at Tannadice, even though he only played the final 13 minutes.

But it looks as though Rangers could be about to strengthen their squad once the window reopens for business in January.

Rather surprisingly, Chris Sutton believes Rangers could win the title if they get their transfer business correct in the January window.

That says a lot about the quality of the Scottish Premiership this season, with Hearts fading away and Celtic far from a force.

Speaking earlier this week, Rohl said it is not just about the quality of player recruited, but rather their mindset and understanding of what it means to be a Rangers players.

Basically, Rohl wants winners who are ready to go every few days and can deal with the pressure that comes with having to win every single game.

Ferguson, who was in caretaker charge for a period of last season, is in total agreement with Rohl’s comments.

“I was very encouraged the other day when he talked about recruiting players who know what it means to wear a Rangers shirt. As a matter of fact, that was music to my ears,” he told the Daily Record.

He’s spot on and it was something I said myself during my short time in charge last season. It’s not enough to be a talented football player when you’re representing that badge.

I saw plenty of them come and go during my own time – guys with tons of ability who struggled with the demands that were placed on them in Glasgow.

Ferguson went on to add that he is also a fan of chairman Andrew Cavenagh now seemingly becoming more hands-on after what was a terrible start to his job.

Who are Rangers looking to sign in January transfer window?

A new winger is needed and a player who can actually score goals fairly consistently, which Cyriel Dessers – for all his critics – did last season.

Hearts centre-back Craig Halkett may be on Rangers’ transfer radar, while Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson is another player close to home that’s been linked.

The previously unheard of Galymzhan Kenzhebek was touted as a target last month, meanwhile, and Shea Charles continues to be linked with the Gers.

There are no doubt other targets that have yet to emerge via the press, but all fans hope is that at least a couple of them arrive this summer.
