2022 Rangers howler laid bare as Danilho Doekhi transfer on cards in January
Danilho Doekhi was once linked with a move to Rangers.
Danny Rohl has somewhat steadied the ship at Ibrox, though there are still a remarkable number of concerns that Rangers need to address.
A lot of them revolve around recruitment, with Kevin Thelwell’s long list of failed transfers finding him under a lot of scrutiny, and rightfully so.
However, one transfer error in particular goes back to 2022, and it revolves around Union Berlin defender Doekhi.
Danilho Doekhi set for transfer with ‘top’ clubs interested
Three years ago, Rangers were beaten to the signing of Doekhi by Union Berlin, though very little was made of it at the time.
The Dutchman had just come off the back of a decent season at Vitesse, with a free transfer on the cards.
Fast forward to now, the 27-year-old has been an established Bundesliga defender, and so far this season, has averaged a goal contribution every other game.
His next move is on the cards, with Florian Plettenberg reporting via X on 11 November that “top Bundesliga clubs” are showing an interest, with enquiries also received from England.
This is a top-level Bundesliga centre back that we are talking about, and Rangers could have signed him for free three years ago.
Who did Rangers sign in 2022?
While failing to land Doekhi on a free, Rangers signed John Souttar from Hearts, and that has proven to be an excellent deal.
Souttar has been one of Rangers’ most consistent players and certainly holds value.
The Scotsman has made 117 appearances for the Light Blues since his move, and has started every league game so far this season
Ben Davies was by far Rangers’ biggest mistake that summer, at least from a completed deal perspective, having joined from Liverpool in a deal worth around £3.5million.
The 30-year-old is currently on loan at Oxford, where he has featured on just three occasions in the Championship.
Nico Raskin, Ridvan Yilmaz and Tom Lawrence were among the most notable signings in the summer, with Calvin Bassey’s £20m move to Fulham their biggest sale.
