Steven Gerrard’s Rangers return may be closer than thought after news from Stamford Bridge

Steven Gerrard has emerged as the frontrunner for the vacant manager job at Rangers.

Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 season, and the supporters still love him at Ibrox.

Rangers have held talks with Gerrard over a return, and it seems as though he is keen on a second spell with the Govan outfit.

His comeback may have moved a step closer after the latest developments away from Auchenhowie.

Steven Gerrard not included in Liverpool legends squad vs Chelsea

Gerrard famously plays in Liverpool legends matches, even mocking Celtic in one in 2023, to the dismay of Richard Keys.

However, Gerrard was nowhere to be seen when the teams were named for the latest legends clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 11 October.

The ongoing talks with the Gers could be the reason for that absence, suggesting that the appointment is getting closer.

Rangers owners need to appoint Gerrard

While potential alternatives are still being mentioned, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh, the Gers majority owners, need to give Gerrard the role.

He knows the club and more importantly, he knows the standards that are required at such a historic outfit.

His return would be a risk, as his record in management has been poor since he departed, and the squad is not at the level as the one that he won the league with.

However, it is worth it, given the standard of the other candidates who could replace Russell Martin, as Gerrard is the best one.

It would bring a feel-good factor back to the Govan outfit, one that was sucked away in Martin’s dismal stint as the boss.

It may be too late for the Bears to challenge for the title, but if anyone can turn it around, and bring them back to the top, it is Gerrard.
