Steven Gerrard told ‘damage has been done’ as frank Rangers reality check drops
Steven Gerrard has been warned about taking over as Rangers manager.
Gerrard is believed to be closing in on a Rangers return, nearly four years after he left to join Premier League outfit Aston Villa.
Gerrard won the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title in a remarkable stint as the Sofascore graphic highlights, but repeating that success with the current Gers squad may prove to be a challenge.
Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers, having only won one of seven league matches in charge of the famous Ibrox outfit.

Steven Gerrard told he cannot win the league with Rangers this season
Rangers have already fallen behind Celtic and league leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, with a nine-point gap to their local rivals and 11 points to the Edinburgh side.
Record Sport journalist Andy Newport warned Gerrard that he cannot expect to win the title this season, given where the Light Blues find themselves at the moment in a brutal reality check.
Speaking on the Game On show on 10 October, he said: “I think this season he will get them back winning and make them competitive.
“Whether that is enough to overhaul a nine-point deficit to Celtic, 11 points to Hearts, I think that is a bit much.
“I think the damage has been done for this season, frankly, I think this year is all about building standards again.”
Can Gerrard overturn huge gap to Celtic and Hearts?
Gerrard faces a difficult effort as Newport states, as the expectations on any Gers manager are to always win the title.
Supporters will recognise that it is a challenge, but if they make a positive start under the returning boss, they might get overexcited and start dreaming of another title.
- The squad is nowhere near the standard of the one that Gerrard won the title with
- His side reached 102 points in the title-winning campaign
- They scored 92 goals and conceded just 13 in that historic season
Gerrard’s leadership and ability to get the very best out of his players could revitalise the Bears and propel them up the table.
They need an awful lot of luck and results to go in their favour if they are to overturn the deficit and undo the damage that was done by Martin.
However, the lack of quality in the current squad means that is an unlikely task at this point, and even a manager with the experience of Scottish football like Gerrard will struggle to do so.
It may be a patient rebuild under the Liverpudlian, but at least he will have the support of the fans while he makes the required changes.
