Steven Gerrard will love Rangers star who Russell Martin did not trust

Steven Gerrard looks increasingly likely to return to Rangers in the coming days.

Rangers parted ways with Russell Martin after a dismal stint in the Ibrox dugout, in which, the ex-Southampton man won just one league match.

Martin’s style of football did not work in Scottish football, and he failed to convert the Gers supporters who did not want him in the first place

His squad management was another concern, which ultimately saw the end of his reign in Govan, with Gerrard the prime candidate to take over at Rangers.

Russell Martin did not trust Nico Raskin at Rangers

Nico Raskin has been linked with a Rangers exit, with Besiktas manager Sergen Yalcin wanting him in the Turkish capital.

That comes after he was dropped by Martin on several occasions after a high-profile falling out between the duo, and a lack of trust from the ex-Gers boss.

Raskin was eventually reintegrated by Martin towards the end of his reign, but he was not the star player that he was last season.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure as the saying goes, and Gerrard will be glad that Raskin is still around, if he takes over in G51.

Raskin was played in a more advanced role by Martin, and the numbers reflect that, as he has the most assists for the Gers in all competitions, this season, with four.

He also takes the second most shots per 90 in the squad, ranking behind only Djeidi Gassama (two) with 1.38, per Sofascore.

The Belgian international boasts an 85.7 per cent pass completion rate with an average of 34.7 passes and 1.62 key passes per match.

Defensively, he also shines, with two tackles per match and 5.46 duels won per game, which would imply that he can do a job at the other end too.

The figures suggest that there was no issue with his performances, and his exclusion was an off-field issue with Martin.

Gerrard will love the all-action nature of his displays, and he could become a key asset for the 45-year-old in his new Gers team, if he ends up taking the role.
