Steven Gerrard negotiations details emerge at Rangers as issue to be resolved

Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe seem desperate to appoint Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

The American owners have taken the lead to appoint a new manager at the Gers after 123 days of turmoil under Russell Martin.

Gerrard looks set to be appointed at Ibrox, but while his arrival feels imminent, there are still a few things that need to be ironed out before it’s official.

Cavenagh will certainly regret letting Kevin Thelwell hire Martin, and the Glaswegian outfit’s chairman has now held talks with the Liverpool icon over a return.

Rangers transfer spend and Steven Gerrard tax issues part of negotiations

Gerrard will be given money to spend in the upcoming transfer windows at the Gers, Alex Crook says.

The talkSPORT journalist has revealed that additional recruitment at Ibrox has been discussed during conversations with the Englishman.

As part of the negotiations, the Liverpool icon’s tax issues from his time at Al-Ettifaq also need to be resolved before any appointment is made.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 10 October, Crook said: “I think he will be given money to spend in the upcoming transfer windows. That’s been part of the negotiations as well. And I believe there’s some kind of tax issue that’s still outstanding from his time at Al-Ettifaq that needs resolving as part of these negotiations.”

Gerrard will have to work with Kevin Thelwell as things stand, and it looks like the former England international is willing to do so, but wants to have a decisive say in terms of transfers.

With the US consortium already spending circa £20million in the summer, it will be interesting to see what happens with the squad in January.

Max Aarons and Mikey Moore loans to be cut short at Ibrox

With Gerrard not having the best of views of the current squad at Ibrox, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a massive exodus in January.

Rangers signed 13 new players in the summer, including Lyall Cameron, and it can be argued that only Djeidi Gassama and Jayden Meghoma have lived up to expectations.

Loan signings at the Gers in the summer

The Gers brought in five players on loan before deadline day, including Max Aarons, Mikey Moore and Nasser Djiga, who have failed to make an impact.

If Gerrard comes through the door at Ibrox, some of the loan signings will undoubtedly be looking over their shoulder, as the current squad arguably needs a ruthless reality check.
