Rangers respond as £3.8m bid submitted for Cyriel Dessers exit

Cyriel Dessers’ future at Rangers remains unresolved as Rangers enter pre-season.

The striker’s future has been heavily debated for months despite the Nigerian international finishing as the Scottish Premiership top scorer last season.

AEK Athens have been keen on acquiring Dessers, as the Greek giants aim to add to their attack.

However, recent reports have suggested that Dessers will stay at Rangers, despite the interest in the 30-year-old.

Now, the saga has taken another twist as the start of the 2025/26 season edges closer.

Rangers reject bid from AEK Athens for Dessers

Dessers’ ongoing transfer saga shows no signs of ending anytime soon.

According to Soccernet.ng (8 July), Rangers have now rejected a £3.8 million bid for the striker from AEK Athens.

It is believed that the Gers want £6m for the attacker, a price that the Greek side are not prepared to match.

After the bid was submitted, their head coach, Marko Nicolic, revealed that his side are not prioritising a move for an attacker, suggesting that their pursuit has now ended.

He said: “No, because in attack we are good with Zini, Pierrot, Martial and even Eliasson.

“We are working on the left-back, but we have time. Full-backs on the market are always a difficult matter. It is not a big issue, we are also looking for a player for another position.”

As it stands, Dessers is set to remain at Rangers this pre-season unless AEK Athens make an improved offer for the attacker.

The 30-year-old is also attracting interest from the Netherlands as his future remains uncertain.

Russell Martin should keep Dessers this summer

Unless an exceptional striker is brought into Ibrox, Russell Martin should look to keep hold of Dessers.

The striker is a proven goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership and is still good enough to compete at this level for another few seasons.

If Rangers chose to sell him now, the Glasgow club would be scrambling for a replacement, with only weeks to go before the start of the season.

Given this fact, it is logical for Martin to keep hold of the 30-year-old as part of Rangers’ upcoming transition season.
