Cyriel Dessers lined up for big Rangers exit after Ibrox wage reveal

Cyriel Dessers’ future at Rangers is up in the air with the summer transfer window approaching fast.

The Nigerian striker was heavily linked with an Ibrox exit in the winter window but a move failed to materialise.

Dessers reportedly had 10 clubs make bids for his services and they could revive a potential deal once the market reopens.

Dessers could exit Rangers as Greek interest emerges

Dessers has been in great form for the Gers, notching five goals in his last four matches in the Scottish Premiership.

However, his future in Govan remains uncertain, with interest in his signature expected to pick back up in the summer.

The 49ers could cash in, given the fact that he is on high wages, with Daily Mail journalist Hugh MacDonald claiming that he would not be willing to take a pay cut.

He told PLZ Soccer (20 January): “From what I understand, he’s on a big wage, so he’s quite rightly not going to go to a club that might offer him 50-60 per cent of what he’s on right now.”

A report from Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, via his X account (16 May), claims that AEK Athens, who knocked Celtic out of the Champions League third qualifying round in 2018, are “highly interested” in the Light Blues ace.

Rangers face tough Dessers decision

Dessers has revealed that he wants to stay at Auchenhowie, but it would not be a surprise if the 49ers sold him when they take charge.

If the Gers can buy a more clinical forward while picking up a decent fee for the veteran and getting his wages off the books, it would be a no-brainer.

Dessers’ stats this season

However, that is easier said than done, the Nigeria international has notched 28 goals and seven assists in 54 matches in all competitions this season in a remarkable personal campaign as the Gers have struggled to catch Celtic and were knocked out of Europe.

Barry Ferguson has brought Dessers back in from the cold since he took over as interim boss, stifling Hamza Igamane’s development in the process and the departure of the Bears legend could lead to the centre-forward’s exit.

His numbers have been solid but he is very prolifigate in front of goal, missing key chances when it matters most and the Americans may decide that they want the Moroccan to be given a more regular role in the starting line-up after the promise that he showed earlier in the season which put the likes of Tottenham and Everton on notice.

If they do, that could spell disaster for the former Cremonese forward and the Goven outfit may decide to cash in, given the Greek club’s interest and his pay packet.
