Rangers v Celtic – ‘Horrible’ Jack Butland injury update emerges

David Edgar has reacted as Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland is set to miss the Celtic clash on 2 January.

The 31-year-old had to be rushed to the hospital on New Year’s Eve with a serious internal bleed and while he was discharged a day later, the Old Firm derby comes too early for him. [Jonny McFarlane, 1 January]

This means that Liam Kelly is expected to start in goal for Gers at Ibrox against their arch rivals.

Via X, the Heart and Hand podcast host wrote: “That sounds horrible, hope he’s okay. Liam Kelly to step in. Sterling or Raskin captain if Balogun doesn’t make it?”

Jack Butland suffers a huge setback ahead of the Rangers clash against Celtic

Butland’s injury sounds extremely serious and thoughts and prayers will be with the goalkeeper.

He was released on 1 January after being admitted a day before and it remains to be seen how serious the injury is.

It came as a bolt from the blue and hopefully, it is not something that keeps the 31-year-old out for the long term.

The onus now is on Kelly to step in and hopefully put in the performance of the season in a high-stakes game.

Defeat in this one may all but end Gers’ title charge and also Philippe Clement’s time at the club given the recent run of form.

The Ibrox outfit go into this one a staggering 14 points behind Celtic and that’s not a situation they would want to be in.
