Rangers torn to shreds as Philippe Clement question posed – ‘lethargic’
Rangers have been torn to shreds by BBC Scotland journalist Amy Canavan after they drew 2-2 against Motherwell on Sunday in their Scottish Premiership clash.
The Gers managed to keep their second place in the table, but the gap to league leaders Celtic has now been increased to 14 points.
The pressure upon Philippe Clement’s head has once again increased with questions now being asked about his future by Canavan, who was unimpressed by the decisions made by the Belgian boss for the Motherwell clash.
“Clement made seven changes to the side who were beaten 2-1 by St Mirren on Boxing Day in search of a reaction. He didn’t get it,” she wrote via the BBC Sport website (29 December).
“Instead, his Rangers side were lethargic, limp and lacking confidence in a first-half where they were miles off it.
“Chances were created but then, inexplicably swiftly squandered. Efforts which left many in the away end shaking their heads.
“The welcoming of Celtic in a matter of days was undoubtedly on the mind, but, by failing to deal with the task at hand, the visit of the league leaders is even more daunting.
“Igamane has, once again, staked his claim to start that one. The substitute showed once more he knows his way to goal, unlike Cyriel Dessers and Danilo who missed multiple gilt-edged chances.
“More questions for Clement, and more questions of the Belgian as the new year beckons”.
Rangers need to do better in the Scottish Premiership
Clement’s side have wildly underperformed in the Scottish Premiership this season and the huge gap to Celtic is surely already insurmountable.
While their performances and results in other competitions such as the Europa League have been fairly impressive, it sometimes feels like they can’t string two passes together in their league games.
Granted, they may feel some added pressure to try and one-up their arch-rivals Celtic but even if they do have the Bhoys on their mind, it feels like they should be performing to a far higher standard.

This season, their title charge is now obviously written off due to the massive gap between themselves and first place but that doesn’t mean the Gers shouldn’t look for ways to improve as the campaign goes on.
The January transfer window is now just around the corner and with the defensive crisis Clement and his men are in, it would be a rather large shock to not see some defensive reinforcement make their way through the Ibrox welcome doors.
