Postecoglou wants to get rid of what he saw at Ibrox in Rangers draw v Tottenham
Henry Winter says that Timo Werner showed Ange Postecoglou what he wants to get rid of from Tottenham in his performance against Rangers.
The North London outfit travelled to Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday [12 December] and came away with a 1-1 result after cancelling out Hamza Igamane’s 47th-minute goal.
It wasn’t the strongest Spurs performance and one man who stood out for the wrong reasons was Timo Werner.
Postecoglou held nothing back with his criticism of the player in his post-match press conference as he labelled his performance as “unacceptable”.
Winter argues that this highlights a wider problem at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he wrote on X: “The current criticism of Timo Werner is that he shouldn’t be a Tottenham Hotspur player. The problem for Spurs is that Werner is very much a Spurs-type player.
“He showed against Rangers the traits that Ange Postecoglou is trying to rid from the squad, long-standing flaws in the club’s culture, basically a lack of leadership and hunger to take responsibility under pressure.”
Timo Werner made the night for Rangers fans v Tottenham
There is still plenty of work to be done at Ibrox after a tough start to the season under Philippe Clement, but the performance and result against Tottenham last night will surely give the club some hope that things could be progressing in the right way.
It was a fiery night at Ibrox with former Celtic boss Postecoglou returning to Glasgow for the first time, something which certainly led the home supporters to create an intimidating atmosphere.
The occasion seemed to work more in the home side’s favour too as Spurs looked off it while the Gers probably feel as though they could have even got a final goal after Cyriel Dessers had a shot saved by Fraser Forster.
Werner was the standout negative performer for the visitors in the clash between the two sides and Gers supporters will surely have had a smug feeling as they saw their former rival manager rip him to shreds in the press conference.
Winter’s comments are a display of just how much work the Australian still has to do in North London to really change the club, but whether he will get the time to do so is to be seen.
