Ally McCoist reacts to ‘harsh’ Rangers v Kilmarnock controversy in ‘Salty’ jibe
Ally McCoist has shared his thoughts on Joe Wright’s red card at Ibrox as Rangers beat Kilmarnock 4-1 on Sunday (5 May).
Killie took an early lead through a James Tavernier own goal, a moment that was exacerbated by his penalty being saved 12 minutes later after Wright was sent off for a handball on the goal line.
Philippe Clement’s side remained calm, however, with Fabio Silva scoring just ahead of the break before Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence and John Souttar netted to secure the comeback victory against 10 men.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Wednesday (8 May, 6:28am), McCoist said: “I saw the game at the weekend. The Killie boy, the handball was really, really harsh.
“It’s a definite penalty but to get sent off as well was kind of double jeopardy. It’s probably the letter of the law but I think it’s very harsh. I don’t look at it through blinkers. I can open my eyes and see it for what it is.”
With Alan Brazil and Shebahn Aherne in a fit of laughter, the latter responded: “Salty Rangers fans…”
Rangers controversy takes limelight at Ibrox
While double jeopardy is a rule in football, it was difficult to use that excuse when Wright committed the handball on the goal line, stopping Rangers from equalising.
Whether the defender meant his actions, which is still up for debate, the Gers took advantage of the situation to claim the victory and remain just three behind their Old Firm rivals at the top of the table.
Silva was an unlikely hero, following weeks of criticism at Ibrox, equalising in the eighth minute of added time in the first half when it looked like it was going to be one of those days at Ibrox.
The burden of playing with 10 men finally got to Derek McInnes’ team, with Davies, Lawrence and Souttar securing the all-important points ahead of the Old Firm derby on Saturday 11 May.
A victory at Celtic Park this weekend would see the rivals level on points with only two matches remaining after – home against Dundee and away to Hearts.
