BBC pundit baffled by ‘bizarre’ James Tavernier incident live on air in Rangers clash v Kilmarnock

Steven Thompson has been left baffled by a “bizarre” incident involving James Tavernier in the clash between Rangers and Kilmarnock.

Philippe Clement’s side kept their Premiership title alive as they won 4-1 against Derek McInnes Kilmarnock on Sunday (5 May) ahead of next weekend’s Old Firm derby against Celtic at Parkhead.

The away side took the lead early in the second half as a mix-up between Jack Butland and Tavernier saw the ball trickle into the Light Blues’ net much to the confusion of BBC Sport pundit Thompson.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland (5 May, 13:13) he said: “That is bizarre, really really bizarre. The ball was floated into the back post and I think it was Matty Kennedy, he doesn’t get good contact with it, and hardly gets anything on the shot on the angle.

“It comes back across the face and I think it’s Tavernier who ends up just letting it hit him and it goes into the goal. It was so bizarre. Nobody really knew what was going on.”

The entire opening 45 minutes of the first half at Ibrox was shrowded in chaos as all sorts of action unfolded much to the confusion of the pundits and supporters watching on. But the manner of the opener was nothing short of comical.

The cross-in caused little to no concern, but Kennedy’s header back across shouldn’t have even threatened the Gers’ backline, but somehow the ball just hit Tavernier before dribbling its way into the back of the net.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement is under pressure to keep Rangers’ hopes of a Premiership title alive.

There has been a lot of speculation around the Light Blues’ captain’s future in the last few weeks and while there have been no concrete updates, Sunday’s showing was another example that he could well be losing his touch.

Maybe a summer switch could actually be best for all parties. One thing that is for certain is that Celtic and in particular Daizen Maeda will be licking their lips at the thought of facing the Englishman at Parkhead.
