Rangers: Exit-linked James Tavernier could be enticed by ‘lucrative’ Saudi transfer

Rangers captain James Tavernier could be enticed by a transfer to Saudi Arabia towards the end of his career, according to Dan Plumley.

It comes after it was recently shared that Saudi Pro League clubs are eyeing a “big-money” deal to land the 32-year-old, with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq amongst the interested parties.

The football finance expert believes players at the back end of their career are more likely to accept a “lucrative” offer to move to the Middle East.

“I think that is logical in most peoples’ minds,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.

“Obviously, people talk about loyalty and players they think should stay at certain clubs. But if you look at the longevity of a playing career and it is very short in relation to a normal working career, particularly towards the end of players’ careers, then the situation becomes even more heightened.

“That’s not to say that, if there’s a lucrative money offer on the table when you’re young, that you shouldn’t be looking at it.

“But if it’s going to come further down the line and, particularly with the Saudi example, if players can have the potential of a lucrative contract on the table for seeing out their careers.

“We’ve seen that with some of the moves to the United States as well and other aspects of that, so it certainly resonates.

“It is a short career, so it’s always likely to be more enticing if that offer comes around and it’s lucrative when you’re perhaps towards the end of your playing career.”

Could James Tavernier leave Rangers for Saudi Arabia?

There have continuously been reports coming out about Tavernier potentially making the move to Saudi Arabia over the past year or so.

That ramped up further when Gerrard joined Al-Ettifaq in July last year, with the former Gers boss seemingly keen on taking the right-back to the Middle East.

As Plumley points out, he could be more likely to make the move due to his age, but his immediate focus will be on securing more silverware at Ibrox this season.
