Rangers: Chris Sutton shares ‘absolutely enormous’ claim ahead of Old Firm clash v Celtic

Chris Sutton has insisted Rangers are favourites to win the SPFL title ahead of the Old Firm clash with Celtic on 7 April, which he called “absolutely enormous”.

The Celtic hero insisted that should Philippe Clement’s side take all three points at Ibrox, they will have the title in their hands despite facing a trip to Parkhead.

He went on to claim Celtic cannot afford to lose the game amid high praise for the work Clement has done since taking over from Michael Beale.

Speaking to the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [4 April], Sutton shared his verdict: “For the game itself, I’m going to be there and I cannot wait.

“I haven’t got a clue [who’s going to win] but Philippe Clement has done so well with this Rangers team, turning a team around who at the start of the season had very little belief into a team now who are slight favourites.

“They have their game in hand on Celtic while Celtic are top of the league by a point, but this game is enormous. It’s absolutely enormous, because if Rangers win then they will have a real advantage, albeit they’ve still got to go to Celtic Park.

“They will have it firmly in their own hands if they win the game, so from Celtic’s perspective, it’s one they really can’t lose. It’s very difficult to call.

“There are players who are coming back from injury. Rangers had Sima back for them at the weekend, so it’s about who’s fit. I think Rangers, being at Ibrox, will go for Celtic and Celtic will have to be brave.”

Rangers v Celtic will be “absolutely enormous” at Ibrox

The ongoing title race is one of the closest we have seen in recent years, with the two leading sides currently separated by just one point, although Rangers have a game in hand which theoretically could pull them two points clear.

However, that game in hand – coming after the clash with Dundee at Dens Park was suspended – will be pushed to the back of their minds, as Clement’s team know victory at Ibrox in the Old Firm will put the title race back into their hands.

Clement recently spoke out about the passion for football in Glasgow as he was stunned when he first arrived, and with this set to be the first Old Firm clash at Ibrox under his guidance, he will surely be stunned by the scenes at home.

Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil dismissed claims that the game would be a title decider with so much football still to play, but as the game edges closer and nerves start to intensify, there is certainly plenty on the line at Ibrox.
