Net new investment speculated at Ibrox as former Rangers chief speaks out over finances

Dave King has revealed his hope that Rangers head coach Philippe Clement receives “net new investment” ahead of next season.

The Gers are enjoying a superb season under the Belgian, lifting the Scottish League Cup earlier this term and are still in the running for both the league title and the Scottish FA Cup as well.

Ex-Ibrox chairman King is hopeful that, regardless of Rangers’ trophy haul at the end of the campaign, Clement will be backed in the transfer market.

He told Rangers Review: “I’m hoping [Clement] gets a net new investment.

“I don’t know what the position regarding net new investment will be, but I think if he gets [that], no matter what happens in the rest of the season, I will be going into the new season feeling good for the first time since 55.

“Let’s hope nothing over the next few weeks derails that thought process. In my case, it won’t. You can get wobbles.

“It would be great if things kick on from where we are but even if they don’t, I still feel that there is a solid base there to go forward for the next year or two.”

Rangers must continue to improve from a position of strength

Rangers have become a force to be reckoned with under Clement’s guidance.

It is a testament to their quality this term that a treble-winning campaign is no longer considered even in improbable terms.

In addition to the trophy they have already secured, the club is in the semi-finals of the Scottish FA Cup and sit just one point off top spot in the Scottish Premiership table, with a game in hand on leaders Celtic, who they face on 7 April. Their destiny remains firmly in their own hands.

But regardless of how much success the Gers enjoy this term, King’s assertion that the club must continue to bolster the playing squad is wise.

Should they fall short in one or both of their remaining trophy hunts, then shortcomings can be identified and then addressed in the market – and should they go all the way, fresh faces could help them defend their titles next term and push for a better European campaign.

Rangers are very good – investment will help them stay that way.
