Rangers: Tom Lawrence likened to ex-Manchester United and Barcelona ace Gerard Pique

Wes Brown has likened Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence to former Manchester United and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.

Pique, much like Lawrence did not get too many chances at United and had to move elsewhere to establish his career.

However, Pique did just that, winning four Champions League titles in total and Lawrence too, has been lauded for his decisions.

Brown told the Daily Record [23 March]: “When Tom was coming through, I’d watched him in the youth-team games. The problem was the first team was good. The prime example of that is Gerard Pique.

“We all knew he was excellent — but at no point did we think we were going to break up Rio and Vidic. It wasn’t going to happen. Gerard was still young and learning, but we all knew he was going to be a fantastic player.

“Tom would have had a similar situation as he’d have had players like Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs ahead of him at that time. I always feel timing is important. If three midfielders are out injured all of a sudden you are in. Look at Kobbie Mainoo just now. If everyone is fit does he play? Probably not.

“We all know what Tom can do. He’s an exciting player. He could probably be more consistent but ultimately you can see the talent is there. He loves football. He did a good job at Derby in difficult circumstances.

“He’s 30 now and you get to a certain point where you want to challenge yourself a little bit and maybe that was his rethinking in coming to Scotland. It’s a chance to compete in Europe and for prizes, which will have been important because he does have the ability.

“He’s a grown man now and he wants to get back to a team that has the right qualities, playing in Europe, taking on some of the best teams abroad where the standard is higher. I’ve seen it many times and when you play at a higher standard, you up your own levels and hopefully that’s what happens for Tom.”

Can Lawrence win Rangers the league?

Lawrence’s decision to play for Rangers appears to be a strategic career move that could significantly benefit him.

Despite possessing evident talent, the Welshman faced stiff competition for first-team opportunities at previous clubs, similar to Pique’s situation at Manchester United.

By moving to Ibrox, Lawrence not only secures regular playing time but also gets the chance to compete in Europe and contend for trophies, offering him the platform to showcase his abilities on a bigger stage.

Additionally, playing for a club of Rangers’ stature exposes Lawrence to a higher standard of competition, which could potentially elevate his own performance levels.

Moreover, at 30, moving to Scotland allows him to experience a new footballing environment while still being able to compete for significant honours.

Ultimately, if Lawrence can contribute to Gers’ success and help them win the league at Ibrox, it would validate his decision and mark a pivotal moment in his career.
