Rangers trail West Brom in race to sign Derby County forward Tom Lawrence

Rangers are reportedly trailing West Brom in the race to sign Derby County forward Tom Lawrence on a free transfer.

According to the Daily Mail, the Rams failed to convince the 28-year-old to stay on at the club and he leaves when his contract expires on June 30.

There is a queue of clubs keen on signing him including the Ibrox outfit, but they are not favourites with the English Championship side now leading the race.

Worth pursuing

Rangers are in desperate need of reinforcements in the final third this summer given the uncertainty over Alfredo Morelos’ future.

The Colombian will enter the final year of his contract and he looks no closer to committing his future to the club.

In case he does not sign a new deal, there will be plans to cash in on his services this summer, rather than letting him leave for free in 12 months.

Lawrence could be a player who takes the Colombian’s place in the side and he could become a first-team regular under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He may prefer playing as a number nine, but the Wales international is capable of playing anywhere across the front three.

His versatility may be another reason why the Ibrox hierarchy are pursuing his services but they need to act quickly as they’ve seemed to have fallen behind in the race to sign him.

In other Rangers news, contract talks with a key player have hit a new impasse with a summer exit now on the cards.
