Rangers: Paul Lambert shares new Old Firm verdict after ‘Massive’ Celtic blow

Celtic have suffered a “massive blow” in their title race with Rangers this season having lost Callum McGregor to injury, according to Paul Lambert.

Both Old Firm rivals suffered shock defeats over the weekend in the Premiership, with the Gers losing 2-1 at the hands of Motherwell on Saturday (2 March) and Rodgers’ Hoops being well beaten by Hearts on Sunday (3 March).

While that has left the Light Blues top of the Premiership table, Lambert has admitted that he thinks the remaining Old Firm fixtures will be decisive between now and the end of the season.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (4 March, 8:38) he said: “I think Callum being out of the team is a massive blow for them [Celtic] but you’re right, this is the first time in a few years that it’s a toss-up.

“I think the Old Firm games are going to be massive this time round. You could be sitting here in six, seven weeks’ time and be thinking that Celtic are back on top again, all the sort of negativity that you get will blow away.”

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement beat Celtic and Brendan Rodgers to the title?

Rangers supporters would have feared the worst after they saw Clement’s side lose to Motherwell at Ibrox and Celtic fans will have been licking their lips at the thought of returning to the top of the table after a poor run.

But Clement’s side were given a massive let-off as the Hoops were well beaten by Hearts to leave the title race in the exact same position it was before a ball was even kicked on Saturday afternoon.

This battle between the two Old Firm clubs will rumble on until the end of the season and it could well go right down to the wire. Rangers simply have to improve their record against their Glasgow counterparts if they want to lift the title this season.

Clement’s side ‘welcome’ the Hoops to Ibrox on Sunday 7 April and that match could well define the title race this term. Hopefully, the Belgian can mastermind another big win, but between now and then he has plenty of games to focus on.
