Neil Lennon and Kris Boyd clash live on Sky Sports over Rangers title credentials in new Celtic verdict
Neil Lennon and Kris Boyd have clashed over whether Rangers are capable of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title following the Light Blues' defeat to Motherwell.
Philippe Clement's side missed the chance to extend their lead over the Hoops at the top of the Premiership table as they lost 2-1 to Stuart Kettlewell's side at Ibrox on Saturday (2 March), despite James Tavernier's excellent second-half penalty.
While that is the Gers' first loss at Ibrox under the Belgian, Lennon believes that the manner of Rangers' defeat has left him unconvinced that they have enough to beat the Hoops to the title this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event on Sunday (3 March, 11:09) he said: "Yesterday's result will put a doubt in some people's minds about their credentials. In terms of Rangers, they're there or there about but I'm still to be convinced. Are you convinced?"
Boyd quickly hit back saying: "I'm convinced, they were totally written off, out of it not that long ago, now they're back in the title race and there's a title race on."
Lennon responded, saying: "Listen, if Rangers win the league, they deserve to win the league but at the minute I'm not convinced."
Will Rangers be able to beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title this season?
One result will not define this season's title race and even if it does, it won't be the Gers' defeat on Saturday. Both Rangers and Celtic will drop points between now and the end of the season as this title race goes down to the wire.
It wasn't too long ago that pundits were suggesting that the Hoops had handed Clement the title with their poor form and underwhelming January recruitment, now the suggestion is that the Gers have done the same.
With two Old Firm clashes to be played between now and the end of the season, those derby fixtures will likely be the decisive moments in the final knockings of the title race, Rangers simply have to improve their record against the Hoops.
Hopefully, Clement's side will quickly bounce back from Saturday's underwhelming defeat against Benfica in the Europa League. A good result in Europe will change the entire narrative around the title race once again.
