Rangers defender Nikola Katic opens up on Ibrox future plans

Rangers defender Nikola Katic has admitted that he is unsure about his long-term Ibrox future.

The Atheltic reported on 26 July that Katic has been told he can leave in the summer window.

Katic’s agent has made it clear that the defender is not looking to leave, and now the defender himself has suggested that he wants to play for the Gers, although the competition is fierce.

“I have a contract, I played some matches during the preparations, some I didn’t. There are a lot of us, there is strong competition, but as everywhere, the struggle is day by day,” Katic told Sportske novosti (27 July).

“I think I have the quality to play for Rangers, but of course it all depends on the coach, we’ll see. That’s all I can say, I can’t say whether I’ll stay at Rangers or not, whether I’ll sign a new contract or not.

“But I definitely believe in my qualities. I had a difficult two years, I missed the first one due to an injury, last season after a year of not playing I was on loan in Hajduk, it was not easy to play after the injury. Now I finally have that real feeling back and I’m in a good position.”

Van Bronckhorst needs to make a call here. Katic was one of the standout players for the Gers under Steven Gerrard, but he is now facing strong competition in the side.

The Gers have lost one of their key players this summer in the form of Calvin Bassey who joined Ajax. However, the Bears have enough depth in defence, with John Souttar joining the club on a free transfer.

Katic spent last season on loan at Hajduk Split in his homeland, where he made a strong comeback. There was a clause in his deal where he could have joined permanently, but the Croatian club couldn’t afford the money.

He has been used sparingly in friendly matches, and it remains to be seen whether the Dutchman decides to keep him at the club.

Rangers have further added depth in defence by signing Ben Davis from Liverpool, and Katic is further expected to drop down the pecking order.

Plus, Rangers have Leon King as a promising defender who is looking to get more games this season.

With just a year left on his contract, his future now hangs in balance.
