Player’s father claims Rangers are on verge of finalising January transfer

Rangers are on the verge of finalising a deal to sign Colombian striker Juan Algeria from FC Honka, the player’s father has confirmed.

Speaking to El Diario de Todos Extra, Alonso Alegria, who also acts as the 18-year-old’s representative, revealed that a January deal is close to being wrapped up.

He said  “This step is close to being taken. It is already a matter of process between the Honka team and the Rangers club. At this moment we would be 90 per cent in that Rangers is Juan’s next team.”

Earlier this week, Colombian news outlet Antena 2 reported that Alegria is set to sign for Rangers on an initial loan deal that will later be made permanent.

El Diario de Todos Extra now adds that the teenager is currently in Colombia, waiting for talks between Rangers and Finnish side Honka to conclude.

But based on what the striker’s father said, it should not be long before there’s a full agreement between all parties and the player can head to Glasgow.

Rangers fans won’t need reminding that signing a Colombian striker from Finnish football has worked in the past with Alfredo Morelos joining from HJK Helsinki three years ago.

Morelos was more of a complete package when the Gers landed him in 2017 whereas Alegria is still a young up-and-comer who’s yet to really show his worth in senior football.

The Colombian has only made six first-team appearances for Honka, with all of them coming this year in the Veikkausliiga, Finland’s top-flight. However, all those appearances came as a substitute.

Rangers’ scouts must have seen something in Alegria in youth football but it is also worth noting that he’s signed up to the World in Motion agency.

World in Motion has a number of Finnish, Colombian, Scottish and English players on their books with Alfredo Morelos, Craig Gordon, Conor Coady and Aaron Ramsdale among their clients.

It wouldn’t be a shock if that’s how Alegria has caught the eye of Rangers.

In other Rangers news, Jim White has shared a major transfer update on Billy Gilmour after he was linked with an Ibrox return.
