Rangers are reportedly close to securing a deal for Colombian attacker Juan Diego Alegria on a loan with an option to buy from Finnish side FC Honka.
The 18-year-old moved to the Finnish side in September 2020 and has made six Veikkausliiga appearances so far this season (via Transfermarkt).
According to a report by Colombian outlet Antena 2, the Colombia under-17s international is close to sealing a loan move to Rangers after being identified by the club’s scouting team.
If the move goes through, he will follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Alfredo Morelos, who arrived at Ibrox via Finnish side HJK in 2017.
Alegria is a centre-forward by trade and scored four goals in four appearances for the Honka second team following his arrival from Colombian side Deportes Tolima in September of this year (via Transfermarkt).
He has since been promoted to the first team, who sit fourth in the Finnish premier division, the Veikkausliiga. The 18-year-old also has two caps for the Colombian under-17s side, which came during the 2019 U-17 South American Championship.
While Morelos had been a regular goalscorer in Finnish football prior to his arrival at the club (via Transfermarkt), Alegria is a far more unproven player at the top level, with just six senior appearances to his name.
Acquiring him on a loan with an option to buy appears to be a smart move, as it would allow the club to get a closer look at his potential before committing any more money and resources to his development.
With such a small sample size, it is very difficult to judge a player’s quality, so bringing him into training at Rangers will give them far more understanding about Alegria as a player.
Given that he has represented his national side at youth level, he is clearly well thought of, but the lack of senior appearances would mean he is unlikely to feature for Rangers before the end of the season, should the move go through in January.
The fact that he scored four goals in four goals at youth level certainly suggests there is talent, but given that is almost impossible to gauge the quality of the opposition, Gers fans should refrain from getting too excited just yet.
