Ibrox View: Rangers should think twice over player role in reported deal

Rangers forward Jermain Defoe has proved that he can find the back of the net with ease wherever he has been in his career.

Ever since arriving from Bournemouth on loan, the former Tottenham man hasn’t started as many games as he would have liked but still has a cracking record.

One of the reasons that has prevented that is Alfredo Morelos. The Buffalo has been in sensational form this season – scoring 15 goals in 14 starts in all competitions.

It has been revealed by STV on their website that Rangers trio, Defoe, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis are poised to put pen to paper on a new contract.

The news outlet claim that there were suggestions that Defoe would take up a player-coach role at Ibrox after making his loan switch from Bournemouth permanent, something that is not the case.

The 37-year-old will instead continue just as a player for Gerrard, keeping his role as back-up to Morelos.

Defoe would have been the perfect candidate for a coaching role at Ibrox. The experienced striker could have been a massive role model for the clubs younger forwards looking to break into the first team.

It seems strange he hasn’t been given that sort of role, especially after he admitted he would love to end his career at Rangers – a coaching position would give him a natural progression after retirement.

Rangers should think twice over not including a coaching position at the club, especially after Defoe admitted that he had fallen in love with the club, so if he was to be offered a role, surely he would jump at the chance.
