Defoe: I want to end my career with Rangers
Striker Jermain Defoe has said that he wants to end his career with Rangers and said that he’s blessed to be playing for a club as big at the tail-end of his career.
Defoe has made a big impact north of the border and he’s currently the leading scorer in the Premiership with nine goals in eight games, ahead of Celtic’s Ryan Christie who’s on six.
Those goals have helped Rangers to the top of the league, two points ahead of Celtic, and there’s a real feeling that this could be the season that Rangers put a stop to the dominance their rivals have enjoyed over the last eight seasons.
There’s a real feel-good feeling at the club and fans will be even more excited when they hear what Defoe makes of playing up at Ibrox.
Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Monday, 7am), Defoe said, “I’m loving it.”
“The whole environment, everyone at the club from the women in the canteen that have been there for like 30 years. The kitman Jimmy who tells me all the stories of all the legends who played for the club, all the players and the squad we’ve got, the manager and stuff and the fans. I’m loving it, it’s been amazing.”
Alan Brazil asked, “Do you love the club?”
“100%,” Defoe replied. “I’m not just saying it because you need to, I think you can tell to be honest by how it is gone and it’s an amazing football club.
“I’ve always known Rangers are a massive club and I just feel blessed at the back end of my career to get an opportunity to play for a massive club that is really special.”
Asked if he wanted to end his career at Ibrox, Defoe said, “I would love to.”
Defoe is 37 but he’s proved that he’s still got more than enough for the Premiership. He looks lethal in front of goal at the moment and while his current loan spell runs out at the end of the season, it looks like Rangers will have a big chance of signing him as a free agent in the summer.
His contract with Bournemouth is over in 2020 and if they can agree on wages, it looks like Defoe might be about for some time to come.
