Talk of Ryan Fosso joining Rangers has quietened in recent days.

The 24-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Ibrox this summer.

He only signed for his current side Sturm Graz in January of this year, making the switch from Dutch Eredivisie outfit Fortuna Sittard.

Capable of playing in central midfield and in the heart of defence, the Cameroonian international has the potential to be a highly shrewd signing for Rangers.

This versatility is certainly one of Fosso's big selling points, and is sure to be a trait of his game that would attract Derek McInnes to his services.

However, there is one specific thing he does better than anyone at his position, and he does so seemingly wherever he goes.

Why Ryan Fosso could actually bolster Rangers' attack

Ibrox News has been covering Rangers' pursuit of Fosso every step of the way this summer.

But, as reported in the Daily Record's print edition on 10 July, they claim that Gers are not in the race to sign the Switzerland-born midfielder.

Indeed, the arrivals of Cammy Devlin and Dan Neil respectively have considerably strengthened the Bears' engine room already.

You can never have too many quality contributors in that department though, and Fosso could bring something to the table that few holding midfielders do.

As per FotMob, no defensive midfielder in either Eredivisie or the Austrian Bundesliga last season was able to better Fosso's 100 per cent (Eredivisie) and 50 per cent (Bundesliga) cross success rates.

That's not where is attacking input ends either, as he completed 88.3 per cent of his passes in Eredivisie last term and won 1.37 fouls per 90, whilst he also won a penalty for Sturm Graz too.

Fosso's 6.96 recoveries per 90 in last season's Eredivisie ranked him in the top 7.1 per cent of players in his position, and highlighted his ability to win possession and get his team moving forward again.

Even going back to his 2023-24 campaign in Swiss football with FC Vaduz, he completed 39 successful dribbles, played 50 accurate long balls and took 39 touches in the opposition box in just 29 league appearances.

So, whilst Rangers have already made a number of moves in central midfield that could damage Fosso's chances of an Ibrox switch, could McInnes actually have a different plan in store for him if he was to join?

Rangers could get more out of Fosso down the flanks

With an obvious ability to deliver excellent and accurate crosses into the box, that's something that Rangers will need to replace now that James Tavernier is gone.

Fosso is a central player by trade, but as detailed via Transfermarkt, he has actually made a handful of appearances as a winger during his career.

He's played down both flanks too, offering McInnes some flexibility to deploy him in a wide range of positions.

Should Gers line up with a front two next season, then playing him in a wing-back role could combine his crossing ability with his natural defensive solidity together to great success.

So, if he has dropped off Rangers' transfer radar, then there's some strong evidence on the table to show why Gers chiefs may just want to have another look at his file, as there could be a hidden gem in there.
