Why Rangers will be on red alert for Ryan One as Sheffield United battle £35m claims
Rangers may soon be able to profit from Sheffield United's potentially costly legal dispute to land the services of Ryan One.
In Lawrence Shankland, Rangers have already added some serious firepower to their strike force this summer.
And with Youssef Chermiti looking set to stay, as well as Bojan Miovski and Ryan Naderi in their ranks, Derek McInnes isn't short of depth up top.
However, 20-year-old One could be one for the future at Ibrox, with the Scotland youth international a very highly-rated talent at Sheffield United.
Sometimes in football, one team's problem is another's opportunity to take advantage of it.
Very soon, this could be the exact scenario that plays out concerning Sheffield United and Rangers.
Why Sheffield United could be hit with £35million bill
Ibrox News has detailed Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder's recent claim about One's future being at Bramall Lane.
The Blades hierarchy clearly see the young Scotsman as a big part of their future, and don't appear to have any interest in letting him leave the Steel City this summer.
GiveMeSport correspondent Ben Jacobs has this week claimed that Rangers, alongside Leicester City, are both keen on signing One.
But given Wilder's and the general feeling about his potential in Sheffield, the likelihood of Gers landing his services in the coming weeks appears slim indeed.
That could all change in an instant though, as detailed in a BBC Sport report from earlier this month.
Sheffield United's current owners, COH Sports Bidco Limited, have seen their company hit with a winding-up petition by the Blades' former owners, after claiming they are owed £35m.
Saudi Arabian Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud's investment company, United World, have written to the English Football League (EFL) and have stated that they believe "both we and the EFL have been seriously misled."
Blades' ex-owners are alleging that the current owners haven't paid up outstanding fees owed to them upon their decision to sell the club in 2024.
So, if they are to win this case, then United may well need to sell some players in order to help raise the funds to cover this alleged debt, and that could put One on the market.
If that is to be the case, then the striker put some very solid evidence down last season as to why Rangers should be ready to make a long-term investment in him this summer.
One shone away from Sheffield United in 2025-26
Since joining Sheffield United from Hamilton Academical in September 2023, One has made 22 competitive appearances for the Blades, scoring once.
Clearly still a raw talent with plenty of upside, United don't want to rush his development, and are taking their time with him.
One spent the second half of last season out on loan with then-English League One side Lincoln City, who would go on to win the third-tier title and earn promotion to the Championship in 2025-26.
The striker played 16 times in League One and scored five goals in just under 650 minutes of league action, and his underlying numbers tell the story of how impactful he was.
As per FotMob, his 0.70 goals per 90 ratio and 1.54 shots on target per game ranked him in the top 2.2 percentile of all League One strikers last season.
Meanwhile, he also placed in the leading 7.8 per cent for his 3.49 shots per game, as well as creating 0.98 chances and taking 5.59 touches in the opposition box per 90 too.
One is more than just a goalscorer though, as his 3.49 recoveries and 0.42 interceptions per game show, with both of these returns ranking him in the top 10 and 8.9 percentiles among his positional rivals respectively.
Overall then, One has the profile of being an industrious, combative young centre-forward with a sharp eye for goal, and one that has the feel of being a real fan favourite wherever he goes in his career.
