Why goalposts are already shifting for Derek McInnes after new Rangers transfer admission

Derek McInnes remains eager for Rangers to make more new signings ahead of the new campaign beginning.

The Gers ramped up their preparations for the new campaign with a home friendly against Saint-Etienne on Wednesday evening.

Lawrence Shankland and Thelo Aasgaard scored from the penalty spot to earn Rangers a 2-1 win.

It marked a winning start for McInnes at Ibrox, but the recently appointed boss made clear after the game he is eager for more transfer business.

Rangers have so far made six new signings since last season's hugely disappointing campaign.

But rather annoyingly for McInnes and the fanbase, the incoming activity has dried up of late.

Rangers have so far brought in Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, Ivor Pandur, Dan Neil and Cammy Devlin.

Each of those can bring something different to McInnes' squad, but it has now been a fortnight since the most recent of those was annouced.

As covered by Ibrox News on Wednesday, it was hoped that Vanja Dragojevic would be announced as a Rangers player before the Saint-Etienne game.

That was not the case, though, and quite what the hold-up is to sign Partizan Belgrade's skipper is a mystery.

However, that is a deal that does still seem as though it will go through imminently.

Speaking last week, McInnes said he wanted a couple of deals done by the Saint-Etienne game.

He did not get his wish, with no new signings officially announced, and the Scotsman has now had to readjust his expectations.

"It is clearly a team we want to strengthen," he told Sky Sports when asked for a transfer update. "Those conversations have been had with the recruitment team and the board.

"We are actively working to try and get things done. Ideally before West Ham on Sunday, but certainly if we can get two or three things done before next week's game [at Dundee United] that will help us.

"I don't think there's any team that are going to get everything they want, certainly ahead of the first game of the season. The transfer window goes on for a few weeks yet."

The goalposts have therefore moved for McInnes, who is now hoping for the two - or three - new additions by the time the Scottish Premiership season kicks off.

To the defence of Rangers' transfer chiefs, they were very quick out of the blocks this summer.

Bringing in Shankland on a free contract, seemingly out of nowhere, set the tone very early on.

Further exciting signings followed, but fans are hungry for more before the season begins.

Getting Dragojevic announced will make a big difference to the mood of the fanbase.

Rangers then have a week before the real business gets going, so there is definitely still plenty of time to get these next two deals done.
