What Rangers were prepared to do for Hugo Siquet transfer as Club Brugge stance emerges

Rangers may have hit a brick wall in their pursuit of Club Brugge defender Hugo Siquet.

The Gers are known to be interested in strengthening their options at right-back.

Ross McCrorie was signed during the summer, while Dujon Sterling is also on the books at Ibrox.

But Derek McInnes is keen for another option in a position that was largely occupied for over a decade by former caption James Tavernier.

Rangers started Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Hibernian at Ibrox without a specialist right-back, and reinforcement there feels imperative.

However, unless there is a sudden change of heart, it does not look like Rangers are going to be successful in their pursuit of Siquet.

How do Club Brugge feel about selling Rangers target Hugo Siquet?

Not many supporters will have been overly familiar with Siquet.

However, his name has been bandied around on Tuesday, with the Gers keen to make him their new right-back

It was reported earlier on Tuesday that the Gers made a bid to sign the 24-year-old, who won the Belgian Cup with Brugge in 2024/25.

However, Sacha Tavolieri provided an update that does not make good reading for Rangers or their supporters.

The Belgian transfer journalist wrote on X that Club Brugge consider Siquet "unsellable" this summer.

He said that Rangers made an initial bid and were ready to go even higher, but Club Brugge have immediately shut the door on a transfer.

It means the Gers and McInnes might have to look elsewhere in their search for a new right-back.

Who else is going on at Rangers?

Rangers owner Andrew Cavenagh promised that more signings would be made this transfer window.

The Gers' hierarchy are desperate to deliver on that promise, but a deal for Siquet looks extremely difficult to do.

Another option at right-back for Rangers is Aston Villa's Kosta Nedeljkovic, with both loan and permanent deals having been mooted in recent days.

Couhaib Driouech is also due in Glasgow for his medical on Tuesday, with the Bears agreeing a £7million fee with PSV.

So there is plenty of movement happening, it just might be that Siquet is not among the incomings.
