Why Rangers are keen on Hugo Siquet transfer as right-back search takes new twist

A new candidate has emerged in Rangers' transfer pursuit of another right-back this summer.

Derek McInnes has already added Ross McCrorie to his Rangers ranks in this area, but he appears to want more.

Indeed, Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh revealed his expectation of three to five more signings being made before the transfer window shuts.

One of those could now be Hugo Siquet, a 24-year-old Belgian international who plays for Club Brugge.

He's been there since the summer of 2024, having previously been contracted with German Bundesliga side Freiburg.

And now, his strong form in Belgian football seems to have put him on Rangers' transfer radar as the summer transfer clock begins to tick down.

How Rangers currently feel about signing Hugo Siquet

Rangers' search for another right-back looks to be intensifying this week, with Siquet not the first player to be linked in this position over the last couple of days.

Aston Villa's Kosta Nedeljkovic has been touted with a move to Ibrox by the Daily Record on Monday, clearly suggesting this is an area of the squad McInnes isn't overly happy with what he's currently got.

And now, according to Foot Mercato, Siquet's situation is being closely followed by Rangers.

It's claimed that the Bears have taken a shine to his profile, whilst his performances for Brugge has also helped put his name out there.

Siquet is contracted with Club Brugge until 2028, meaning the Belgians may be ready to cash in this summer for a premium fee rather than risk seeing his value drop if they keep hold of him without a contract extension.

But just how good was Siquet for Brugge in 2025-26, and what do his numbers suggest about the type of right-back he is?

The loss of James Tavernier meant it was always going to be tough for Rangers to replace their legendary right-back.

What he offered in terms of all-round play, but particularly in attack, was second to none in Scottish football during his time in Govan.

However, Siquet would certainly appear to bring plenty of attacking qualities to McInnes' side if he is to be signed this summer.

As per FotMob, no right-back in Belgium's Pro League created more chances per 90 minutes than Siquet's 2.66 in 2025-26.

Meanwhile, his 2.24 successful crosses per game ranked in the leading 4.4 per cent, whilst his 0.25 expected assists per 90 put him in the top 5.9 percentile of his positional rivals.

So, with Rangers currently struggling to turn their attacking dominance into goals, as seen against Dundee United and Hibernian in particular, Siquet could seriously sharpen Gers' cutting edge down the right.
