What James Penrice thinks about Rangers transfer as preference revealed

James Penrice is high up on Rangers' remaining transfer priorities.

The left-back has been identified as a top target, with the Bears keen to sign another player in the position after Tuur Rommens' setback.

It has been reported that Rommens could miss several weeks of action due to a groin injury, though there was already no natural cover for the Belgian at Ibrox anyway.

The Gers were always likely to sign a new left-sided defender for Derek McInnes, but Rommens' injury has made their next transfer priority clear.

There have also been rumours of the Light Blues making a move to re-sign Jayden Meghoma from Brentford.

However, it's clear who Rangers want to sign between Meghoma and Penrice.

What James Penrice now thinks about a move to Rangers

Rangers have been tracking AEK Athens' Penrice for a while, who has also attracted interest from several UK clubs.

The 27-year-old has a wealth of experience in the Scottish Premiership, and only left Hearts for Greece in June of last year.

Rangers would prefer to sign Penrice on loan rather than make another move for Meghoma, though they are yet to agree terms with AEK.

According to an update from Sky Sports on Thursday, Rangers remain in talks with the Greek side for the Scot.

The Govan side have yet to reach a club-to-club agreement, but it is now understood that Penrice wants the move to Ibrox.

AEK Athens prefer a sale, and it's not known if Rangers are entirely set on trying to sign the player on loan.

Why Rangers prefer Penrice to Jayden Meghoma

Meghoma was a useful deputy option to Rommens in the second half of the season, but was more of an attacking full-back than a defensive one.

Rommens, however, was clearly better at attacking and was also equipped with better defensive skills.

Penrice is mainly a defensive-minded full-back, which will give McInnes a different profile of player to use than Meghoma would.

He will push Rommens on more than Meghoma would, and could be an addition that goes under the radar for Rangers.

The Light Blues now just need to reach an agreement for the defender, and from there, personal terms should not be an issue.
