Thelo Aasgaard fights losing battle at Rangers despite latest show of commitment

Thelo Aasgaard may be set for bitter disappointment at Rangers under Derek McInnes.

The Norway international is set to return to pre-season training at the Gers early, despite being able to take an extended break after the 2026 World Cup.

It feels like the 24-year-old is hoping to impress the Scottish manager ahead of next season.

Aasgaard found himself in and out of the starting lineup under Danny Rohl at Ibrox and will surely be hoping to improve his prospects under McInnes.

The former Hearts boss has already made some major changes to the squad, with six players joining the Glaswegian outfit.

The Scottish manager has had to wait before having his entire Gers squad at his disposal due to the World Cup.

While the Norwegian playmaker's arrival will be a big boost for the 55-year-old head coach, it remains to be seen how he will be used in G51.

Aasgaard played in the number 10 role behind the centre-forward under Rohl, but he may have to settle for a different position next season.

McInnes has preferred a 4-4-1-1 formation during pre-season, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him start Lawrence Shankland and another number nine up front when the competitive games arrive.

Aasgaard, who was described as a "fantastic" signing by Kevin Thelwell last summer, will likely struggle for a place in the starting lineup at the Govan side.
