The compromise Rangers have reached with AEK as James Penrice medical set

James Penrice looks set to sign for Rangers with a deal agreed with AEK.

The Gers are in desperate need of a left-back with Tuur Rommens expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.

The Belgian is the only option currently in the Bears' squad, and that is already causing issues.

Derek McInnes has been utilising a three-man defence with wingers operating as his fullbacks in order to cope.

However, it did not take long for a solution to present itself, with Penrice looking likely to become a Rangers player.

How much are Rangers paying for James Penrice?

Rangers have been ready to bid for Penrice this week, and it seems that offer was accepted.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via X on Thursday, Penrice is set to join the G51 outfit on loan with an option to buy.

Additionally, the medical for his transfer is set to happen on Friday.

The Bears are likely to be paying a loan fee on top of covering Penrice's wages.

Disagreements over that loan fee were what was previously holding up a deal and it seems a compromise has been found.

While those figures are yet to be made public, we do already know how much a permanent transfer could cost in the future.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the option to buy clause for Penrice - who has 146 Scottish Premiership appearances to his name - is set at £1.7million.

It is quite an affordable price for Rangers.

News of Rommens' injury is likely to have ramped up Rangers' pursuit with McInnes finally having another option for the left-back role.

What does Penrice bring to Rangers?

Penrice is a high-flying attacking fullback who operates high up in the opposition's attack.

However, he is also capable of covering defensively.

As per Sofascore, on a per game basis, Penrice contributes at least one key pass.

He makes 1.4 tackles per game while also recovering the ball 1.8 times throughout his appearances too.

In his last season in Scotland for Hearts in 2024-2025, Penrice contributed to seven goals over the campaign - two goals scored and five assisted.

He also managed to create 14 big chances in 33 appearances.

With Rangers struggling in the final third, his arrival will certainly be welcomed.

And with the signing of Couhaib Driouech expected to be announced shortly, Penrice could build a new relationship on that left-hand side this season.
