Rangers told they're in line for multi-million-pound profit as Olwethu Makhanya amazes vs Celtic
The Gers summer signing started his first Old Firm derby at Ibrox on 13 September in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final.
With the South Africa international forming a solid partnership with Emmanuel Fernandez, the Light Blues dominated Martin O'Neill's team in the 3-0 victory.
Makhanya moved to Ibrox from Philadelphia Union in the recent transfer window and has seamlessly fit into Derek McInnes' team.
The 22-year-old showcased his qualities on the ball against a decent Celtic team, dribbling past opposition players and playing some decent passes out of the back.
Apart from being comfortable on the ball, the centre-back wasn't afraid to put in a challenge when required.
What future looks like for Olwethu Makhanya at Rangers
Makhanya was one of the best players against Celtic as the Gers thrashed their Old Firm rivals at home.
The Light Blues paid the MLS club £3million for the South African ace, who signed a four-year contract at Ibrox.
If the centre-back continues his development on an upward trajectory at the Glaswegian outfit, it wouldn't be surprising to see them make a hefty profit off him.
Calvin Bassey became the Govan side's biggest sale in 2022 after spending two years in G51, joining Ajax for £20, and there's no reason why the Philadelphia Union ace couldn't bring in similar money in the coming future.
Speaking on Hotline Live on 13 September, Daily Record journalist Andy Newport said: "Makhanya at the back. I mean wow, that guy. I think it's £3m Rangers signed him for.
"If he carries on like this, they're going to make that multiple times because he's a proper classy operator."
What Derek McInnes' defence could look like in a year
Fernandez and Makhanya's partnership is starting to flourish at Rangers after a poor start to the season.
The former Peterborough United prospect looks much better in recent weeks alongside the South Africa international.
Not long ago, the Nigeria ace was the most talked-about defender at Ibrox, but Makhanya has rightfully taken his place.
If Fernandez can continue to put in consistent performances until next summer, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Gers cash in on him.
The Govan side would then have to find a new partner for Makhanya.
At right-back, Dujon Sterling seems to have found his rhythm, while Tuur Rommens and James Penrice could provide adequate quality on the left.
