How Rangers' start to the season has raised conversations about Emmanuel Fernandez sale already

Rangers' shaky defence has already raised the question about Emmanuel Fernandez's future at Ibrox.

The Bears are only two games into the 2026-27 campaign, and are already being criticised for a weak backline.

Derek McInnes suffered an early blow after Ben Godfrey's injury against Dundee United, which has since forced him to play Dujon Sterling at centre-back.

Fernandez has started both games against Dundee United and Jagiellonia Bialystok, but has been outlined as a key reason for current defensive fragilities.

Not only that, but the 24-year-old has been linked with a big-money move away from Govan this summer.

With speculation on Fernandez's future still circulating, his performances are making a decision easier for Rangers, should they pick up the phone to interested clubs.

Ian McCall hints at no-brainer Emmanuel Fernandez decision

French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennes are said to be interested in Fernandez, who only joined Rangers last summer.

The Nigerian came to Ibrox on a long-term deal after signing from Peterborough United for £3million.

The League One side are said to hold a big sell-on clause for the central defender, who has plenty of admirers across Europe.

While speaking on Open Goal, Ian McCall hinted that the 49ers should make the easy decision to sell Fernandez if decent money comes their way, pinpointing the draw to Dundee United as a key reason why.

McCall said: "They got down the sides of them so easily, Fernandez as well."

He then followed up by saying, "I mean, if you get a lot of money for Fernandez," while puffing out his lips, suggesting it would be a no-brainer decision to sell.

He also agreed that John Souttar should be given a look-in, regardless of whether he has been linked with a move away.

Fernandez had another poor game for Rangers on Thursday, this time against Jagiellonia, as his slip allowed the hosts to score their second of the game, which gives the Polish side an advantage heading back to Ibrox for the return fixture.

How much do Rangers value Fernandez at?

The 1-1 draw at Tannadice on the opening day sparked the first of the concerns around Fernandez and the defence in general.

McInnes' backline was all over the shop once more in Poland, with some even blaming Fernandez for both of Jagiellonia's goals.

He had an undeniably good first season for the Light Blues last campaign, which alone has helped his market value skyrocket.

There have been suggestions that Rangers could look to sell Fernandez for £30m, though the start of the season may make that look like a total financial pipedream for the 49ers.

Either way, they would have to have a replacement already identified, as money isn't the be-all and end-all for success this season.
