Rangers player ratings vs Jagiellonia: Emmanuel Fernandez to blame, Tuur Rommens bright spark

Rangers fell to a poor 2-1 defeat to Jagiellonia Bialystok in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday.

The Bears travelled to Poland to face the hosts at a humid Chorten Arena, which exposed more flaws in their game.

Derek McInnes' side took the lead early on after Tuur Rommens' cross ricocheted off Guilherme Montola and into his own net.

However, Jagiellonia Bialystok were quick to respond as Kajetan Smit's cross was poorly defended, and the ball ended up curling into the net, leaving Ivor Pandur rooted.

The hosts then hit the front minutes later, as Emmanuel Fernandez's slip inside the box forced Pandur into a sharp stop, and Smit gobbled up the rebound for his second of the match.

Rangers now have a one-goal deficit to overcome in the second leg at Ibrox next week, with plenty of unwanted negatives emerging from the match.

Emmanuel Fernandez won't want to see his performance back

There has been much talk of Fernandez this summer, with many backing the centre-half to be a crucial player for Gers this season.

However, the former Peterborough United defender was a root cause of the two goals conceded after failing to intercept the cross that ultimately beat Pandur for the hosts' first of the contest.

His slip for the second goal was somewhat unfortunate, but it is nowhere near acceptable for McInnes, who looks to be having real issues in his defence right now.

Fernandez could have easily cleared the ball to prevent Smit grabbing his second of the tie, but his slip summed up his overall performance on the night.

Why Tuur Rommens can hold his head high

Rommens didn't deserve to be on the wrong side of the result in this match.

He helped set the tone within four minutes after his dangerous ball into the box gave Rangers the lead.

Youssef Chermiti should have finished the chance to begin with, but the Bears' goal wouldn't have came about if Rommens wasn't on the pitch.

The left-back was up and down the flank all game, trying to get the Bears going with relentless energy.

Rommens' teammates let him down, as he and the rest of Rangers will be hoping for a quick response against Hibernian on Sunday before a return fixture with Jagiellonia Bialystok at Ibrox.
