How Rangers hope to right one of many Russell Martin wrongs in Vaclav Cerny transfer latest

Russell Martin's dreadful spell as Rangers manager is still being felt around Ibrox.

The 40-year-old was sacked last October after just 17 games in charge of the Gers.

Danny Rohl steadied the ship to an extent in the second half of last season, before himself moving on and being replaced by Derek McInnes.

McInnes is being backed by Rangers chiefs this summer, with Vaclav Cerny a name that has been touted as another option.

Cerny will not come cheap, though, with Rangers having missed out on a chance to land him last year.

Amid a new update on the Czechia international, it seems those high up at Ibrox are still picking up the pieces from the previous mess.

'Unexpected change' update emerges on Vaclav Cerny to Rangers

Cerny won over Rangers fans with his attitude during his spell on loan in Glasgow two seasons ago now.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News in March 2025, former Rangers player Derek Ferguson admitted he was annoyed at Cerny over some comments made.

But Cerny was a player who showed he was capable of being a real star on his day.

And that is why Rangers are eager to sign Cerny, albeit on a permanent basis from Besiktas.

However, an update via the Daily Record's print edition on Wednesday claims that only an "unexpected twist" would see that deal go through.

That is due to Besiktas being in no hurry to sell Cerny, who for his part would be open to the move back to Scotland.

There is also the small matter of Cerny's £45,000-a-week wages that Rangers would likely need to match.

The report states that Rangers regard not signing Cerny last summer as a "misstep" on behalf of Martin and then-sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

The pair instead looked at other targets, missing out on the chance to land Cerny before he agreed terms with Besiktas.

Who will be next in at Rangers amid Derek McInnes rebuild?

Rangers have been active so far this summer and are not finished yet - not even close.

Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl is another target, but Rangers now face competition from Cardiff City.

The Welsh club are reported to have had a £5.5million offer rejected for Hjerto-Dahl, who is valued close to £7.5m.

Rangers therefore know what it will take to sign the Norway Under-21s midfielder.

Given what has been written about Hjerto-Dahl, it may well be he is the final marquee signing of the summer.

It is then over to McInnes to put all the pieces together in order for Rangers to win back the title.
